The Breast
and Cervical Health Program serves women between the ages
of 40 and 65. BCHP is not the "free mammogram" program.
It is much more than that.
BCHP offers
women free clinical visits which include a pelvic exam, Pap
test, and clinical breast exam. After the clinical visit the
participant is referred for a mammogram. Women are expected
to have the clinical visit prior to having the mammogram.
If the
screening exams indicate that additional tests are needed,
BCHP will pay for the additional examinations. Women enrolled
in the Breast and Cervical Health Program that are diagnosed
with breast cancer and/or cervical cancer usually qualify
for help in paying for any treatment that they need to combat
the cancer.
The Breast
and Cervical Health Program is a state-wide program with service
areas divided up into 7 different regions. This region includes
Benton, Columbia, Franklin, Kittitas, Klickitat, Walla Walla,
and Yakima counties. This region contracts with primary care
clinics, radiology facilities, laboratories, gynecologists
and surgeons throughout the region, so that in most cases
a woman can obtain needed services close to her home.
Since
October 1999, this region has provided the women enrolled
6210 clinical breast exams, 4926 mammograms, and 5637 Pap
tests. This region has diagnosed 39 clients with breast cancer
and 32 clients with cervical cancer or precancerous conditions.
If you
are interested in enrolling in BCHP please look at the eligibility
information.
If you
do not live in this region but are interested in enrolling
with BCHP or just want more information, please contact Amy Gibson at the Washington State Department of Health: Toll
